Two Visions

A true Lakota story on two visions. Two elders had different visions with different outcomes for the same tribe. One vision showed total destruction of their people. One vision showed harmony and growth for their people. So which vision turned out to be true? The answer is both. Both visions became true. It boiled down to what the people believed, as in “word becomes flesh”. The same principle applies to the deaf community. The video is subtitled for all to enjoy.

  1. Deaf Anthology, don't bother with this video. I doubt you'd even understand it.

  2. Cool story.

I think we'll see something similar in our deaf community. Deaf culture as we know it is gone. Deaf culture has evolved, the deaf community as a whole will be more diverse. It's happening already. What really sped up that process is the fictional 'war' that has been waged and usually war isn't the answer. Rather, unity is. Unity and accepting diverse deaf/hh folks. If anyone hadn't seen a good example of unity on video, I suggest you check out Mike McConnell's blog post "An example of a successful organization" and click on the second video. American School for the Deaf participating in Walk4Hearing along with other oral based organizations. We also have Hands and Voices participating in Walk4Hearing and I know of at least one state association of the deaf that participates as well. This is unity.

Thanks for sharing a cool story with us, Barry!

  3. A bit like 'two tribes'. I don't see an deaf community, I just see two areas who are at permanent odds with each other and united by that intransigence. Can we have an 'community' of direct opposites, jury is out... I totally believe in holism as a concept, but there are going to be those who end up collateral damage, and those who feed on that, it's inevitable.
