Turning A Blind Eye on Karl White's Letter

Call it stinky politics. I have here with me a piece of hard evidences (a smoking gun in fact!) showing that some of you knew of this nice letter prepared by Karl White in advance of the EHDI conference in St. Louis. This letter was circulated in a closed "Deaf Community Action" group on Facebook, which some of you (big "D" radical militants) belong to. But yet you decided to turn a blind eye on it. And worse yet, said nothing.

Why? Because you didn't want the world to know the ultimate truth. For the whole world to know it would have watered down the fire you've been building to date. You wanted to paint a ugly picture of EHDI and Karl White. You wanted to discredit them at all cost. You kept forgetting how the truth would always prevail like it has just now. Here goes.

----Letter posted in closed 'Deaf Community Action' group on Facebook----

Subject: Possibility of Demonstrations at St Louis EHDI Meeting

In just a couple of days we will all be meeting in St. Louis for the 11th Annual National EHDI Meeting. You may have heard that people from Audism Free America, the Deaf Bilingual Coalition, and Deaf Rally 2012 will be gathering near the St. Louis Union Station Marriott to protest what they don’t like about EHDI programs during the time we will be meeting to discuss how to improve EHDI programs. As long as they do not disrupt or interfere with the activities of the EDHI Meeting, what they are doing is completely legal and appropriate — and I think we should all support their right to do it. In fact EHDI will be improved if we know and understand their concerns. It would be even better if they would register for the Meeting and join the discussion, because EHDI will be stronger if we have all the stakeholders at the table and everyone is working together to make EHDI programs better. Even though they have chosen not to do that, it is important that we all treat one another respectfully. Everyone has valuable information to offer.

You should know that some of what has been posted on their websites, blogs, and Facebook pages has been angry and, as of late, even threatening. Because of those statements, some people who are registered for the EHDI Meeting have asked me if I think it will be safe to attend. My answer is that we are doing everything possible to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort. With assistance by experts on meeting security, the organizers have developed a detailed response plan for various potential disruptions. The plan has been finalized with input from the staff and security department at the Union Station Marriott and the St. Louis Police Department.

It is sad that we need to spend our time and efforts dealing with the possibility that a few people might act in ways that are disruptive and disrespectful. At the same time, we should always remember that it wasn’t very long ago, and in some cases is still true today, that people who are deaf or hard of hearing have not had equal access, equal opportunity, or equal consideration in so many different areas. EHDI programs have the opportunity to contribute to positive change in that area and everyone’s help is needed to accomplish that goal

The EHDI Meeting attendees will be the only group in the hotel from March 4-6. Because the hotel is private property, people who are not registered for the EHDI meeting will not be allowed in any of the hotel’s meeting space during this time. To help ensure the safety and well-being of all Meeting participants, please wear your name badge at all times. Please be responsive to and understanding of the extra hotel security staff and police who will be onsite during the meeting. Finally, if you notice anything that is suspicious or disruptive, please immediately inform one of the meeting staff members (who will be wearing black polo shirts with an EHDI Meeting logo and will have a name badge with a ribbon that says STAFF). Do not try to intervene yourself.

I am eagerly looking forward to the EHDI Meeting and believe it will be the best meeting we have ever had.

Best Wishes,
Karl White

----End Quote----

You see... Karl clearly said he does not mind if AFA & DBC wanted to protest as long as they do not disrupt or interfere with the activities of the EDHI meetings. He also said that what they were doing was completely legal and appropriate. He went even further and encouraged his people to support their right to do it. And he said these things in writing long before the protest in St. Louis took place.

In this letter Karl wanted to know and understand their concerns because he figured EHDI would be benefit if they understood their concerns. He was hoping that these protestors would register for the meeting and join the discussions. He spoke of sharing EHDI stakes with them. He recognized that they have chosen not to do that but yet he asked his people to treat one another respectfully.

It even gets better! In that letter Karl asked his people to recognize and always remember the fact that it was not very long ago, and in some cases is still true today, that people who are deaf or hard of hearing have not had equal access, equal opportunity, or equal consideration in so many different areas. He made one thing clear. Everybody's help is needed to accomplish the goal.

Surprised? Don't be. On several occasions I've had the privilege of talking with Karl White, personally. As I got to know him I saw him as one of the most generous and warm individual I've known in my time.

Instead, you ought to be surprised at those extremist big "D" militants for hiding this important letter. They actually hid the letter and kept it in the dark, away from the sign language community so that they are able to continue stirring the base with hope to build further anger. Does it remind you of something? It does for me. It reminded me of how deafhood people operated. It reminded me of how radical "D"eaf militants operated. They are more interested in stirring people's base and turning them into ineffective angry group of people who will accomplish nothing.

I have only few words for these angry "D" people. Shame on you.

  1. In additional, shame on you "D".

Normally, it is more of professional manner to do it properly approach with this type of procession.

Do a step at a time before you launch protesting. Those Big D do not even do that and end up being embarrassment to this community as if they are being protest for no reasons. They should have made some kind of propose and do that in closed room. I am sure it can be done very easily. Those people would welcome those discussions. Apparently, big D do not know how to do that. All they do is putting one hand on ear and one hand pumping. 99.9 percent out there thought they may be some kind of mental illness.

Shame on you, shame on you, shame on you big D.

  2. That's right Cavvy. It's not at all difficult to participate in their meetings. Just register yourself to their meetings and walk in with your best suit. Introduce yourself. Sit down and listen. Get to know the people. Open up a bit and start giving ideas... build a relationship with these people. Smile and hug willingly. Be the happy guy. And when you have a serious point to make, they'll surely listen and take your advice to heart. I know because I've done this MANY times when I attend one of these 'policy making' meetings. It's not hard at all. My best guess is these protesters can't seem to read. They can't understand much. They don't seem to own professional clothes. They can't seem to afford registered meetings. So what do they do? They protest. But this approach does not bear fruits.

  3. One more thing Cavvy. I remember four years ago when I was part of DBC core member, I tried to explain protocols to them. I told them how to use effective approaches and how to change policies. They didn't want to listen. Instead they booted me out and gave me a cold shoulder treatment. Since then I've been watching them. They have not won a single battle. Not one. And you know why. They used all the the wrong approach, including hiding this letter from Karl White from the sign language community. Shameful.

  4. Just let the radical "d" people go spending money on the trips, gas, posters and hot meal/drinks for nothing. We should worry if the one of them put the homemade bomb with nails on the chest or fire the bullets from Rambo's gun in the conference/AG Bell building. I strongly doubt that it's going to happen because once they decided to go extreme as "D"eafies, they need to go more extreme than looking all jolly and having fun in front of the camera. So far I only know one hard-core deafie with "d'hood" tattoo on his fingers... At least it's spelled right instead of "deathood". Anyway back to KW, he did good job to keep things under control and I'm sure he wasn't stupid, either.

  5. Yeah VooDoo Island... there is a price to pay when and if we decide to let them go and do whatever they please. By this I mean there are already numerous hearing people who are afraid of deaf people because of what they are seeing out there in this big "D" picket line. They even called EHDI and asked if it was safe to attend. What kind of impression are we giving out here? Be very afraid of us? I mean, what will that accomplish?

  6. Yes, the new hearing parents of deaf child/ren are very easily intimated by deafies- especially after they read/heard that the other hearing parents are being harrassed, taunted and attacked by the deafies over the communication methods inside and outside of deaf online community. The new grandparents of deaf child/ren don't forget Gally protest appearing in National TV and read some strong negative comments from SOME (not all of them) deaf people in the magazines/newspapers, either.

What can we do to accomplish? Just don't go out and make some jackasses out of ourselves, stoop down to some "angry" peoples' lowest levels. It's way way overdue for them to come out and protest since they didn't react and jump out of protesting wagon after they learned about the first tenth CI implants in America, AGB's story and so forth. Anti-Audism rally is the most silliest of all. As always I'd see some deafies smiling, socializing, looking not all serious, giggling with security guards and having all bonded times with protesting mates- especially in anti-awdism rally. Come on people-it's 2012- stay home, save money for family travels/special events and don't waste money and time on the posters/piss-yellow shirts. Whoever still pisses some deafies off still pays SSI, welfare, VR, relay (and etc etc) taxes to take care of some deafies. Isn't that just enough?

  7. I thought Halloween was over now. It was 5 months ago but Today, I saw hair-raising frightful photo of Patti Durr outside of the hotel where EHDI gathering held.
Anyway, Shame on AFA group for not spend time with their families supposed to relaxing on a traditional Sunday!

  8. Yeah Lavender16. I saw that photo of Patti Durr. My hat is off to the photographer who captured her true character and personality. No doubt about it.

  9. Mr. Sewell, do you happened to have the "original" letter from Karl White of addressing the concerns about the potential issues from those so-called, "organizations"? If there is an "original" copy of the letter, is it possible for you to put the letter in pdf file along with his original signature of the letter? It is unfortunate situation for the so-called, "organizations" to cause serious issues with the EHDI since it does promotes positive focus on the child needs. Thank you.

  10. WisDeaf, thank you for your question. As reflected (shown here) it was written in form of an email. Karl used his known email address, which has been verified when he distributed the letter. The best source would be to contact Karl directly and verify this for yourself. Google him up and find out where he works and email him there. That's what I did some time ago and he's been very positive and responsive. Try it for yourself.

  11. hello Barry, I just read your remarks about this email and the lack of transparency on part of the Deafhoodized. I tried to comment on several blogs about being active in promoting ASL/English bilingualism in positive ways, like Howard Rosenblum did at EHDI. Not wasting time protesting outside on the sidewalk. I was very impressed how Karl White conducted himself on the video, especially when David Reynolds asked for 50-50 balance of Deaf to hearing on EHDI. Dr. White said quite firmly, "No." He was never given a chance to explain why. Shameful.

It seems to me that it's the Deafhoodized who are lacking transparency, not Karl White. For example, on her blog, MishkaZena didn't want to talk about how to encourage more workshops related to ASL/bilingualism as one approach to early intervention. She convinced herself those workshops would be rejected anyway because they were too ASL-centric. And she said one commenter was insinuating something and not being subtle.

I don't get it. what on earth is going on here? it makes me sad that there are all these opportunities to take part in the process, but the Deafhoodized want one-option-only-nothing else. *shm*

  12. Howard Rosenblum did participated in the march from St. Louis City Hall to the Union Station where the hotel/EHDI was. Howard probably knew that his participating in the march wasn't harmful (and, probably isn't since we all have the right to rally/protest according to the constitution.) However, I'm not sure if Howard realizes what he's getting into by showing support to AFA. We have to try to get inside his head, he is the CEO of NAD and as such, he will try to accommodate ALL deaf/hh on any issues. NAD's position statement on EHDI involves "giving opportunities to all deaf/hh babies to acquire ASL." Giving opportunities does not equal mandating all. Parents still have the final say. Hearing people do not make decisions for deaf babies and deaf people do not make decisions for deaf babies. The parents do!

There is no question that EHDI has been striving to include more deaf centric folks within their EHDI workshop. Let me quote what one tweeter said was shared at the EHDI 101 workshop:
    ____
Have deaf presenters, deaf people on planning committee, workshops focusing on bilingualism, interpreting services. Many changes! #ehdi 101
    ____

It seems, and I have evidence of such, that those that claim to support ALL choices are actually picking on CI and technology. Anyone that says, "What's wrong with HA? Why CI?" does not know what he/she is talking about. The answer is quite obvious if one is well versed in how HA works compared to CI.

Nothing works overnight. It takes time for things to improve and it takes collaboration, working with - NOT rally/protest (although they are within their rights to do so).

I agree with above commentator regarding Mishkazena and her post, Mishkazena is not interested in making things better, she has been throwing in suggestions (fuels) in hopes it will cause an uproar in the deaf community. A deaf community she was never involved with since birth and she claims she is supporting them? She only wants recognition and brownie points. She also lacks transparencies on her blog, considering how she screamed transparencies a few years ago. One that feeds fuels of anger does not help the deaf community. One that are involved, contributing to improvement of deaf centric within EHDI, gains more.

  13. Hello ASL_HeartandSoul. Like you, I remember what happened when David Reynolds asked for 50-50 percent stake in EHDI. From that point he clearly demonstrated the inability to negotiate effectively. He was only doing it to stir the base. He did not give Karl the chance to explain why he said no. That was shameful but a classic example of how deafhoodized people manipulate issues to their advantage but they were actually disadvantages. They don't seem to know a good thing when they see it.

Talk about MishkaZena, I totally agree with you. Believe me, she has no credibility right now. What little credibility she used to have is no longer there. People like her are only going to make things worse for themselves and they know it.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

  14. HI Candy. I've not touched Howard Rosenblum until now. And there's a reason for that. I did not know him and I don't know where he stands on specific issues. I don't fall for anybody just because they are deaf. For all the same reason I didn't vote for Kurt (the so-called cook expert). They were in pursue of the best cook so what does it have to do with his deafness? Absolutely nothing at all. I was more interested in whether his food actually tasted good. That was it. I could care less if he was deaf. Same principle with Obama. I didn't care if he was black and how he would become the first black President of U.S. I didn't see the color of his skin as an issue but apparently many people did. They voted for the color of his skin without any regards for his qualifications. And we have many sorry voters who wished they didn't vote for him. This is beyond stupid.

Having said that I don't give anybody my vote of confidence just because they're deaf like me. So, Howard Roseblum has not received my vote of confidence. At least not yet. He still has so much to prove to me. I was impressed with the fact that he registered for EHDI meeting and went. Kudos for him. But then as you pointed out he also walked with the protesters... that told me plenty about who he was. He's like Bill Clinton, always aiming to please everybody because he wanted to be liked. Popularity count is constantly on their mind. I hope I am wrong but that was how I saw Howard. I hope he gets his act together sooner than later because it'll ultimately define whether NAD has changed for better or for worse. The ball is in his hands
right now and he's not scoring that many points.

I'm totally with you on who ultimately decides. The parents themselves. Nobody else has the power over parents. No question about that.

I agree with you on Mishkazena. She does not seem to know what she stands for any more. She used to advocate against these radical big D militants but now she's speaking like one. Lack of transparency in her latest blogs are some of the recent examples.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  15. candy, I think Howard Rosenblum stand behind AFA then it will ripple effect to many sponsors or exhibition booths next NAD conference. I was shocked Rosenblum appeared with AFA rally in St. Louis. I am losing respect him. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ahh...

This Kurt and the "hottest chef" contest had NOTHING to do with how well he cooked. It's all about how HOT he looks. That's what the contest was about. Of course, all the deafies voted for him cuz he's deaf.

I was told he's a great cook, though.

  17. Howard Rosenblum was actually a member of the EHDI Meeting Planning Committee. He is listed in the committee on page four of the EHDI Meeting Program Book... If he has issues with the EHDI process, it seems he already had a much more effective place to voice his concerns than picketing with signs and marching into the conference that he helped to plan.

  18. Thanks for the information Mr. Synonym. Now that's a really interesting. It does makes us wonder what he was hoping to accomplish.

  19. Mr. Sewell, I did look up for Mr. Karl White. I wanted to verifiy with you to make sure that we are "speaking" about the same person. Is he the director for National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) at Utah State University? If so, the webpage does provide explosive information abouth EHDI. If anybody else is interested, it is on http://www.infanthearing.org I am impressed and pleased to see how much different researchers have conducted their studies within EHDI. Mr. Karl White is not the only person, who is involved profoundly with the EDHI. My question why he is the target and not other researchers including one of the audiologists, who is deaf and does have cochlear implants? Is it because he is the director for the NCHAM? Could you elaborate? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes WisDeaf. He is with NCHAM of Utah State University. The one and the same. You are right about him not being the only researcher that is involved. For that reason I'm not clear on why he is being targeted while the others were not. He along with NCHAM are only few of numerous EHFI stakeholders. Likewise I was pleased to see numerous different researches done by these people. They're really open to ideas, which basically defeated the purpose of this so-called radical "D" militant rallies.
